FAQ
macOS says the app cannot be opened.
OpenClip is ad-hoc signed and not notarised. Right-click the app and choose Open the first time, or run xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/OpenClip.app.
Does it need an internet connection?
Only to download the speech model once (and for the optional update check). Using Claude to pick clips needs Claude, of course; Quick pick works offline.
Does my video get uploaded?
No. Everything runs on your Mac. If you use Claude, it receives candidate text and requested transcript text, not your video.
Do I need an API key?
No. The MCP server runs locally and is launched by Claude Desktop or Claude Code, using your own Claude subscription or setup.
Which Macs work?
macOS 13 or later. Apple silicon is what it is tested on.
Which languages work?
The Fast and Balanced models are English-only (base.en, small.en). Pick the model that suits your recording; see Getting started.
Why not ffmpeg?
OpenClip only uses codecs that ship with macOS (AVFoundation and VideoToolbox), so it bundles no codec that needs its own license.
Is there a Windows version?
Not yet. It is on the roadmap.
My captions have a wrong word.
Double-click the word to fix it. See Captions.
I lost my edits.
Edits stay in memory until you save with ⌘S. A * after the project name shows unsaved changes. Keep your original video.
Where do I report a bug?
On GitHub, with your macOS version and the length of the video.
